I just bet on a very interesting maiden race at Saratoga. On it's face it wasn't anything special, a 5 1/2 furlong Maiden Special Weight race for three year olds, although three year olds usually run at least 6 furlongs. Then I started looking at the auction prices of the horses and everything changed. There were a bunch of expensive failures in the race.
Normally, most horses have started their careers by the spring of their three year old year. Many horses start racing at two. This race, on Sept. 2 had two first time starters and two horses which had only raced twice before.
Here are the auction prices & stud fees for the horses in the race:
Post Name Stud Fee Auction Price
1 Abraaj $35,000 $450,000
2 Coronado's Strike $23,741 $350,000
3 Fourth of Gold $50,000 $220,000
4 Metallic $15,000 N/A
5. McKenzie Pass $500,000 $1,000,000
6. Quail Call $60,000 N/A
7. Unaffected $5,000 $65,000
There was about $700,000 in stud fees and a little over $2,000,000 in auction money in the race.
McKenzie Pass is owned by Bob & Beverly Lewis, who are big-time players in the horse business. The horse has been running for 13 months now and hasn't been able to put it together.
How did I do? I had a $2 exacta box with horses 1, 2 & 7. It came in 7-2-6 and paid $21.90.
