I'll have another few posts recapping my weekend in Las Vegas, but I wanted to share this one first.
My friend Mark & I were hanging out in the sportsbook bar at the Wynn on Sunday evening. Mark hadn’t been there before. We were having a few drinks & watching the end of the Cardinals / Astros game. In the 8th inning, two guys walk into the bar, one guy is really manic and his more stoic buddy. They sit down in the bar, and immediately the manic guy is very actively watching the game.
Whenever anything happens in the game he jumps up and talks to the TVs. We learn that he has “a lot of money” riding on the game. His friend says that he made a bunch of “max bets” with the Cardinals. I had never heard of a “max bet” in a sportsbook. The manic guy asks us to root on the Cardinals. We’re not fans of the Cardinals, but since the Cubs season is in the tank, we started rooting for the Cards.
The game heads into extra innings. He’s getting more and more animated as the game goes on. He says in passing that he would buy us a bottle of wine if the Cardinals win. We really didn’t believe him.
Finally in the 13th inning the Cards break through and win the game. The guy goes nuts when the game ends. We see him go over to a waitress about something. The waitress we were talking with was a floater and had to head off to another part of the casino. The guy then goes up to the one open window in the sportsbook and cashes out. The current waitress comes over and says something about a bottle of wine and that they don’t have a wine list in the sportsbook. Her English wasn’t very good so we didn’t know what she was talking about.
He comes back with a small wad of $100 bills and a handful of chips. They were all $1000 and $5000 chips. It looked like there were $30,000 worth of chips in his hand. He mentions the wine again and we tell him that there isn’t a wine list in the sportsbook bar.
He then mentions how important karma is to him, and peels off five $100 bills and gives them to us and then he leaves with his buddy. After what happened sunk in (and we stopped laughing) we decided to spend it all and have nothing to show for it. We also decided not to gamble any of it. We had gambling money. Here is how we blew the $500:
Drinks at the Wynn: $50
Our Rockford-bound waitress: $50 (we went and found her in the casino, she was very happy, we figured she deserved some of it since she played along as well)
Dinner at Bouchon (in the Venitian): $300 (it was worth it)
Assorted drinks around Las Vegas: $45
Limo to the airport: $45
Beers at the airport: $10
Yeah, this was the most amazing thing that’s ever happened
to me in Las Vegas.
