MAC address filtering does not protect you from people trying to hack into your wireless network. The MAC address is transmitted in every packet sent to the wireless router, so someone can use a packet sniffer to find out your MAC address. They can then change the MAC address to yours and use your router. And it really is that easy for someone determined to use your network.
I learned this (and other good stuff) from Security Now!, which is a podcast with Leo Laporte (of TechTV fame) and Leo Laporte. Go here to subscribe or download their latest show.
Their main show This Week in Tech is also very geek-tastic, but it is roughly an hour long, which may be too long for some people.
